Ok, Ok! After listening to all you Gippsland people about providing a location closer to you all, we have fianally taken the plunge and opened our new premises in Pakenham.
Why Pakenham? Well, it saves you all from having to travel all the way into Melbourne, and saves us having to travel all the way to the LaTrobe, plus it helps all the people in Warragul as well. (also the fact that it is a nice new area with HUGE factories also helped!)

NEW SITE OPENING SOON!
Some of you may already be aware that we have been on the hunt for a larger plant machinery training site for a while, and we are finally pleased to announce that we have found it!!
It will be the only dedicated heavy earthmoving machinery training facility in Victoria (that we are aware of), and situated on a couple of acres of lovely digging soil just for the purpose.

More details will be posted here soon!

PPP (Productivity Places Program) Update for prospective students and all ESP's

As you may already be aware, the funding currently available under the PPProgram is coming to an end.

The last application dae for grants under this program for Victoria will be next Tuesday 2nd June.

The last inforamtion/application session will be held at Cove Seaford on Monday 1st June at 11am, in anticipation for the allocation day on the Tuesday.

Many of you have called and emailed us regarding alternative arrangements for this program after the 1st July, and at this point the Victorian Government has not yet made clear it's intentions.

We quote the information from their website:

Victorian Arrangements for Productivity Places
A key feature of the Victorian Government’s policy statement Securing Jobs for Your Future – Skills for Victoria, released in August 2008, is the Victorian Training Guarantee, an entitlement to a government subsidised place in recognised training that can be accessed at any time and will continue to be available for training at successively higher levels.
In light of these reforms to the Victorian training system, the Victorian Government has reached an agreement with the Commonwealth Government that, rather than run a separate Productivity Places Program in Victoria, this funding will be incorporated into existing arrangements.
While not offering separate ‘Productivity Places’ in Victoria, under this arrangement we will commit to deliver an additional 138,000 places over four years as part of current and future training delivery arrangements.
Prior to demand driven funding being fully introduced, and to ensure Victoria delivers those additional places, Victoria will purchase an additional 5,000 training places in 2009 and 10,000 places in 2010.
Victoria is also purchasing up to 1,119 priority health places.

R.I.P CRUMPET THE WONDERDOG

After 14 years of loyal service, yesterday we said goodbye to Crumpet. Many of you would remember Crumpet who was at work with us nearly everyday and had to endure thousands of students prodding and poking her (and she rightly got them back by stealing their lunches!)

NEW TOY!!

Yes, we have new toys for the machinery yard. We took delivery of the first new excavator last week, and the new front end loader/backhoe.

The guys managed to detour past the office so that we could all get a go at sitting in a brand new machine before it gets trashed at the yard, so we were all pretty happy to have a go at ripping all the plastic out of the cabin, trying out the a/c and the CD player!

RED CARD CHANGES

As of the 1st July 2008, WorkSafe Victoria will now be in control of the old red cards. They will now be called Construction Induction, or CI cards.

CI cards will be issued by WorkSafe Victoria direct.

The course outline itseld is very similar to the red card, and COVE Training will continue to run them on a weekly or bi-weekly rotation.

PRODUCTIVITY PLACES PROGRAME

Most of you may be aware of the Federal Government funded courses that were to be released on the 1st April 2008. At this stage we are yet to be notified of the full details of the courses and entry requirements into the courses that will be offered, but invite you to regsiter your interest so that we can contact you (hopefully within the next week) to apply for the funding. WORKSAFE LICENCE CHANGES - UPDATING YOUR LICENCE

As most of you are aware, the new WorkSafe Licencing changes came into effect in July of this year.

One of the changes is the requirement to renew your licence. Current Yellow and Blue style cards (or licence) will all have an expiry date.

It is up to you to renew your contact details through worksafe so that your licence doesnt expire.

As of today, Fork Lift training and licencing prices have dropped. We have also changed the structure of our courses to better suit your needs.

ONE DAY TRAIN & TEST COURSE - now $245
For people who have in excess of 100 operating hours on a forklift. One day is ample time to cover both the theory and practical guidelines to acheive the WorkSafe Victoria Licence.

TWO DAY TRAIN & TEST -now $295
For people with little prior forklift knowledge, heaps of theory training (we go through it a few times) as well as driver training on reach and counter balance forklifts.

THREE DAY BEGINERS COURSE - new $445
This is a new course, recommended for the people with ; language, literecy and numerecy issues, people with limited or no machinery experience. A thorough driver training course designed to get you from zero to hero in three days.

MORE EXCAVATORS!!

After most of our students suggested that it may be a good idea to have a bigger range of excavators down at Hastings to practice on, we are now thrilled to say that we have two more new toys for you all to play on! A 6 tonne Hitachi, and a 7.5 tonne Komatsu. We will also be keeping the other two excavators that we have always had originally, so that makes a total of 4 excavators down there now!

LICENCING CHANGES - Effective 1st July, 2007

As some of you will already be aware, there are going to be some significant changes to the licensing system as we know it over the next few years.

WorkSafe Victoria are implementing these changes by phasing them in stages.

This first stage took place last week, where the Certificate Assessors were issued with new paperwork, replacing the old C1 & C2 form system with the L1 & L2 forms.

From the applicants perspective, the main changes are:

1. Assessors/RTO's are no longer able to pay the licening fee on behalf of the student.
2. Licence fee has dropped from $65 to $60, and are now payble to Australia Post (not to WorkSafe themselves).
3. Australia Post will require 100 points of identification and additional passport photographs to issue the licence.
4.The new forms will be valid for a period of 60 days from the time of issue. Failure to lodge with Australia Post will result in having to re-complete the entire assessment again.
5. The new licence will now expire after 5 years, when the applicant will be given the oppertunity to re-register their licence for a fee of $40

Please note that the above changes were implemented by the government in order to begin a nationally regulated licencing system, rather than the state government regulated ones now, which varied from State to State causing problems for people working in more than one state, or moving from state to state.

The new reforms were a recommendation from a private organisation that was employed to review the old system and make suggestions for a reform.

The findings of this organisation were reported and the government held seminnars open to public discussion and feedback in seminars all around the country late last year, with the system being implemented early this year.

WORK SKILLS VOUCHERS GRANTS 2007

Late last year Cove applied to be part of the Work Skills Voucher scheme in order to make available to approved applicants the following three programs:

1. Certificate II in Civil Construction (Bituminous Surfacing)
2. Certificate II in Transport Distribution ( Road Transport)
3. Certificate II in Transport Distribution (Warehousing)

The federal government agency that is dealing with these applications has fallen behind schedule with the processing, and has notified us that we will not know if we can offer these places until early February.

As places will be limited, we suggest that you put your name down on our register so that you can be contact as soon as we have an answer.

DUMP TRUCK COURSES

We are happy to announce that we are now offering the Dump Truck course on an on-going basis.
Several of you have called and enquired about this over the last few months, and we are now in the process of calling everyone who was interested back in order to give them all first preferenace in booking themselves in before we offer the course to the general public.

This is due to the limited class size, as you can all understand means that everybody will get more training time and less time standing around waiting whilst others are doing their training.

FORKLIFT LICENCING- SHOP AROUND!

We recommned you shop around before booking into your next training course. Not just referring to price here, ask about service ratios.

A common complaint that we hear from our clients is when they are booking into a course that they previously attempted elsewhere (in particular Forklift Licencing) is that they were bundled into a class with 12 other students, who all had to share the ONE trainer and ONE forklift.

The students that shared this information with us told us the following:

1. It was a three day training course
2. The first day consisted of theory training (watching videos, listing to the trainer)
3. The second day they all trained on the forklift, with one forklift, between 12 people, they got approx 30 minutes of driving time, and stood around watching the other guys most of the time
4. On the third day, they did their tests. After they each did thier tests, they went home.
5. Out of the twelve students, 6 failed - thats 50% of the class!!

Obviously, to the six people that failed, it was not only a waste of time, but a huge waste of money. (I'm not going to mention how much they paid for this, but I am going to say that I think it was way too much in the first place)

To those looking at booking in for a forklift licence, a piece of advice about what to ask before handing over your hard earned is:

1. Ask how many forklifts they have
2. Ask how many forklift types they have
3. Ask how many other students are going to be in the class, and what their class maximum is
4. Ask how many trainers their will be taking the course

This will give you pretty good guide to the type of company they are and what you are actually going to get in return for your money.

To show that we practice what we preach, in response to the same questions:

1. Ask how many forklifts they have. Answer: At least 3 at each of our sites
2. Ask how many types of forklifts they have. Answer: At least two types at each site
3. Ask how many other students are going to be in the same class... Answer: A Maximum of 8 students between 3 forklifts
4. Ask how many trainers will be taking the course. Answer: A maximun of 1 trainer per 4 students, or 2 trainers in a full class of 8 students.

Hope that this clears things up for you all, and gives you somthing else to think and ask about before booking in for your courses.

RESPONSIBLE SERVICE OF ALCOHOL (RSA) - ACCREDITED PROVIDERS

It has come to our attention that a certain company in the local area is misleading the public regarding companies that are accredited to provide Responsbile Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificates.

Apparantly they are claiming that they are the only accredited providers in the state of Victoria.

Obviously, this is not true, and highly misleading to the general public.

There are many providers that are accredited to provide this training on behalf of Liquor Licencing Victoria, including Universities, TAFE's and other private providers including ourselves.

Misleading the public is against the Department of Education and Trainings' (D.E.T) guidelines for Registered Training Organisations. This kind of conduct should and will be reported to the D.E.T.

In the begining there was a boy.......

This boy loved playing in his sandpit with his tonka trucks. When his parents asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up, he said that he wanted to own his own school (whacked, we know).

Fast forward 20 years (or so), and there you have it. C.O.V.E Training (stands for Centre Of Vocational Education). The little boys own privately owned, privately funded school, specialising in, you guessed it, real-life tonka trucks.

We deceided to start a blog for a few reasons, one of which is that somehow we went from one man and his dog, a small factory in Cranbourne and a forklift, to several men, two women, about 12 big toys and three locations without really keeping track of how it happend.

Not only that, as in any small business, things are changing constantly around here, some weeks people are wanting nothing but excavator certificates in order to get on certain sites for jobs, and then other weeks we would have trouble giving away an excavator certificate. We figured a company blog would be a great way of letting our clients know whats going on as it happens.

Legislation changes are another thing that are constantly changing around here. We are governed by so may different bodies and associations, it's hard to know what new things have come out and why, and also what other things are now obsolite.

We are a little different to every other training company out there. The boy in the sandpit didn't want to open up just another school, he wanted a school where you actually learn things by doing things, so we try to make our courses as real as possible, so yes, you will be out there in the rain sometimes, and yes it's going to be cold and miserable, but hey, not many machinery operators are working indoors are they?

So, we hope you enjoy this blog, remember, it's a sort of company diary/newsletter. We are not a 'dry toast' company, and nor do we want to be, so the posts will reflect that to some extent.
